Samsung Galaxy S10 + In The Test

The tenth generation of the product line is launched at Samsung with four Galaxy S10 models. The quartet listens to the names Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10 + and Galaxy S10e, where the “e” stands for “Essential”. In summer, the trio will be complemented by the first 5G smartphone of the Koreans, the Galaxy S10 5G.

We were already able to secure a Galaxy S10 + and clarify in the lab test whether Samsung could grow in comparison to the predecessor model Galaxy S9 + and make up for the adversary Huawei soil well. The voltage increases!

Expensive Ceramic Dream

At the cost price, the Samsung calls for the Galaxy S10 +, we had to swallow, however, once: 1.249 euros are a fierce house number and should exceed the budget of many interested parties. Whoever can pay the price or wants, gets an absolute dream smartphone with a perfect feel.

The choice of materials: Gorilla glass 6 on the front, a noble metal frame as a border and a back made of the extremely hard and durable ceramic composite in black or white – you can not pack technology more beautiful.

The perfect workmanship and the protection against water and dust according to IP68 certification are also suitable for this.

Infinity-O Display With Biometrics

The biggest visual innovation compared to its predecessor, however, is the 19: 9 display called “Infinity O-Display”. The 6.4-inch dual-edge OLED display takes up almost the entire front and dissolves with a fine 1,440 x 3,040 pixels. This results in a pixel density of high 522 PPI.

A noticeable screen frame is barely recognizable. This is made possible by the front camera, which has moved into the display area and captures motifs through a laser-cut recess in the display. Despite the grown display, Samsung has succeeded in keeping the dimensions at the level of the Galaxy S9 + – and sometimes even undercutting them.

But the display is not the only special feature on the front of the Galaxy S10 +: Hidden in the bottom works on smartphones first ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. The technique should provide even greater security than standard capacitive fingerprint sensors. Once set up, the corresponding area is displayed on the lock screen. If you open your finger, the smartphone is jerky, ready to start.

The scanner has no negative impact on the quality of the presentation because, in the test, the display presented every type of content at the top level. Photos, videos, and games were brilliant, strong in color and, depending on the ambient brightness, played with a large contrast range.

Added to this is a radiance of 486 cd / m2 under laboratory conditions, which can even be increased to 780 cd / m2 under optimal conditions.

Acoustic entertainment is provided by stereo speakers, excellent in-ear headphones from AKG and Dolby Atmos.

Hardware And Connectivity Top

Under the chic shell works a highly potent core: The Octa-core CPU of the in-house Exynos 9820 is up to 2.7 GHz fast. This is joined by a “neural processing unit” (NPU) for functions with artificial intelligence.

For outstanding performance in the benchmark tests and in everyday life then also provide the 8 GB of RAM, which was equipped with the test device. For the user, there is also a fat 465 GB of free space, which can be further expanded by the micro-SD memory card. If that’s still not enough, you also get a version of the Galaxy S10 + with 12 GB RAM and 1 TB of user memory for 1599 Euro.

Alternatively, the slot holds a second SIM card and dominates with dual SIM. The remaining connectivity is also state-of-the-art with LTE Cat 20 (2 Gbit / s in downlink and 150 Mbit / s in upload), latest ax-WLAN, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and USB-C-3.1 connection.

AI Supports In Everyday Life

This also applies to the redesigned One UI version 1.1, which works on the Android 9 system. In order to enable one-hand operation despite the large display, the UI focuses on the lower two-thirds of the display in many in-house functions, such as text input or telephony. There, the control surfaces are then positioned.

In turn, the NPU uses Samsung to learn about user behavior and thus to offer intelligent battery management. Particularly exciting are the “Bixby routines”, which analyze the applications used in everyday life and propose appropriate automatic mechanisms to the smartphone owner. In the car, for example, WLAN is switched off and Bluetooth is switched on.

The service is completed by the digital voice assistant Bixby Voice, who finally speaks German.

Battery Power To The People!

After the Galaxy S9 + has weakened in stamina, we were curious how the Galaxy S10 + would beat with its 4100 mAh battery – that’s at least 600 mAh more. To make it short: outstanding.

In display mode, the Samsung flagship reaches a running time of strong 10:34 hours. With this performance, the feature “Wireless Power Share” really makes sense. When activated in the Quick Menu, the Galaxy S10 + serves as a wireless charging station for inductive accessories, such as the Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Watch Active, or smartphones that support the QI standard. A really clever detail, especially as Wireless Power Share works even when the Galaxy S10 + itself is being charged, which works hard and wirelessly in a fast process.

Even otherwise, the flagship knew how to convince. Thus, Samsung achieved twice in the radio characteristics “very good”. The quality of the phone is also in the green and rounds off the excellent result of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + skillfully.

Conclusion: Entry Into The Leaderboard For A High Price

Samsung is back and secures the Galaxy S10 + not only the second place in the connect leaderboard but also blows up the Huawei Phalanx. The newcomer shines with its feel, endurance, performance, and innovative features.

The other side of the coin, however, is the high price. The air in this price range is very thin and the future will tell if buyers accept this price.

The cheaper alternatives are the Galaxy S10 and especially the Galaxy S10e, which we will test in the next issue. Then we also clarify how Bixby Voice and the AI functions beat in everyday life.

Camera In The Test

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy S10 + with a strong triple camera, which has very high practicality with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto. How the image quality of the main camera failed under laboratory conditions, read on the next page.

Samsung equips the Galaxy S10 + with three camera sensors. Old acquaintances are the two 12-megapixel sensors with optical image stabilization. The main camera also has a dual aperture (f / 1.5 and f / 2.4) and dual-pixel technology and offers a detection range of 77 degrees.

The second sensor takes care of telephoto shots with a cutout of 45 degrees and has an f / 2.4 aperture. New is the third camera, which is responsible for ultra-wide-angle shooting and has a resolution of 16 megapixels. The detection range here is 123 degrees wide.
