Honor view 20 is growing up, which shows the young second brand of Huawei now quite clearly. Especially for the younger target group, the inexpensive and well-equipped phones are attractively priced. Contrary to the current trend, Honors overseas sales grew by 150 percent in 2018.
According to GfK, the manufacturer currently ranks fourth in Germany and still has a lot to offer. This includes a stronger differentiation from the mother Huawei, as CEO George Zhao betrayed us in an interview.
The View 20 does not fit well into the hitherto very cheap rail of the Chinese: 570 euros call Honor for his upper-class device. But you get the very finest technology, which costs a few hundred more elsewhere. Externally, the phone is an eye-catcher.
On the reverse side, a laser-engraved V-shaped pattern changes the color depending on the light and seems to move across the surface of the glass. If you have the View 20 in your hands, they are happy about the rounded back and the valuable aluminum frame.
Unfortunately, there is still no certified protection against water and dust, which should be expected in the higher-priced top version. In the scope of delivery, there is at least a protective cover and on the display, a film is applied from the factory. Speaking of display: The 6.4-inch screen is a feast for the eyes.
This is ensured by the thin edges on all sides and the abstinence of a Notch. Honor installs the selfie camera directly in the screen. Thanks to the small diameter of 4.5 millimeters and the position on the left in the corner, the camera leak almost disappears after a short time. Watching movies and playing in full-screen mode is so much more fun.
There are no big outliers in the results of the display measurements. So the luminosity of 475 cd / m2 for an LCD in the upper midfield and the contrast in daylight is okay with 1:20, but not very good either. As the viewing angle becomes sharper, the contrasts drop rapidly. Overall, the screen placed qualitatively in the good midfield and metrologically behind Huawei P20 and before the Mate 20 in.
The Camera Is Awesome
Honor is the first manufacturer to install a camera sensor from Sony, which offers up to 48-megapixel resolution and thanks to an aperture of f / 1.8 sees quite a bit of light. By summing 4 pixels into one, also known as pixel binning, the View 20 shoots 12-megapixel photos in standard mode.
The high resolution in the background, however, leaves room for maneuver and allows a double zoom, which achieves good results despite its digital nature. On request, an artificial intelligence-based scene detection optimizes the settings. This brings more contrast and saturation into the picture, without being too unnatural.
In addition to the main sensor, Honor uses a ToF camera (Time of Flight), which is used for distance measurement and generates a 3-D image of the environment. This benefits the portrait mode, which has a nice bokeh effect as well as a cleanly separated background.
Just the lush camera equipment requires powerful hardware. The View 20 benefits from Huawei’s top chipset Kirin 980, which provides fast image processing with two neural processing units and up to 8GB of memory.
Even the most demanding users will find it difficult to complete the system in combination. Gamers can also look forward to a graphic tiger booster, which provides even more power while playing. In addition, Honor has installed a third WLAN antenna, which should guarantee low latency, even if one conceals one of the other antennas while holding the phone.
Last but not least, a liquid cooling system ensures optimal heat dissipation. Connectivity has everything you expect in the luxury class: NFC, fast USB 3.1, a headphone jack and a slot for two SIM cards. You can not expand the memory, however, depending on the version, you have to make do with 128 or 256 GB.
On the software side, you get the current Android 9, over which Honor’s new user interface Magic UI 2 is slipped – a visually slightly adapted version of Huawei’s EMUI. The shows up hiring, especially in the management of notifications and offers many practical extras.
Good Graduation In The Lab
The power supply of the system takes a rechargeable battery with a stately 4000 mAh, which is quickly refilled by means of the enclosed 22.5-watt power supply. In the runtime test, View 20 reached an outstanding ten hours. With that, two days of use should be easy.
We are also satisfied with the radio discipline, in which the Phone enters the grade “good” in all three standards. The acoustics stand out especially the very good noise suppression and voice quality. But there are small weaknesses in the volume in sending and receiving direction. With the latter, the little earpiece probably takes its toll.
In this price range, not many smartphones lace-up such a bulging equipment package as the View 20 offers. Above all, the device can score with its exciting appearance and excellent camera. On top of that, there is top-level performance, which should satisfy even the most demanding users for a longer time.
The large display can also be seen, even if it could present something more contrast. If you have 128 GB of memory, you can safely use the cheaper version for 570 Euro. The offers an inexpensive alternative to the expensive elite.
